Because a funeral is about celebrating life, we want to get to know you or your loved one: what makes you laugh and smile, what moves your body, who moves your soul, how do you want others to remember you. These are all questions we discuss, openly and authentically, outside of the funeral home, wherever you feel most comfortable. This may be at your home, at a coffee shop, or in a park. Our conversations will be joyous because life, no matter how many mistakes and regrets you may have, is worth honoring. Every person has lived a great life, and we want to celebrate your greatness.
At Know Before You Go, we facilitate conversations that trigger happy memories. We revel in those memories and from those choose which will be shared at the funeral service. Every detail is covered and secured, including your choice of funeral home, as well as showing you how to manage the necessary funds for such service expenses. Funerals are not cheap; day by day they get more expensive, so it is important to equip yourself with the necessary information and preparation.
When we remove uncertainty from the equation, it promotes a healthier grieving process. We pre-plan and organize, so there is no guess work. Don’t make your loved ones rewrite your life, especially when they are clouded by grief. Pre-planning eliminates the added stress of having to decide how and in what ways to memorialize you at the funeral.
We are not in a sane, clear-headed space to make decisions. Nina founded KBYG so people are prepared for the inevitable. We are not, will not, and do not want to be considered or replace a funeral home. Funeral homes exist for a sole purpose: to carry out services. At Know Before You Go, we do so much more. We ensure your service is carried out exactly how you or your loved one intended it to be. We are your cheerleaders on a day that is incredibly emotionally draining. When our loved ones pass, our mind lacks clarity.
Post Funeral Service:
When everyone else has left and returned to their busy lives, that’s when the real grieving begins. Though the funeral will be a celebration of life, reality is we miss those who pass, and emotional support is necessary to heal. Funeral homes do not have the time nor ability to track everyone after their services are complete. They move on to the next customer. That’s where Know Before You Go comes in. We provide resources for support such as a grief library, pairing and introducing you to local bereavement groups, facilitating clean-up services for donation, and even connecting you with accountants and attorneys as needed.
For 10 years Nina has been a licensed funeral director in New York, and though she had found her niche and passion in the industry, she never really found her place in the funeral home atmosphere. Her rather vibrant, colorful personality stood out among black suits. Fitting into such a restrictive, conservative industry was a challenge. So she set out to change that which she struggled to embrace: the idea that funerals are only about death. Eventually, Nina met others who embraced their positions as funeral directors as celebrators of life, creating a better service for their communities. She is now focused purely on helping families and individuals plan ahead—not only for themselves but for their loved ones. She wants people to learn lessons we can share, pass along, and teach. In 2015, Nina founded Know Before You Go, Inc. so families are never left in the dark, have control of their final wishes, and have guidance at all stages of death—before, after, and beyond.
To incorporate her creativity as well as her passion for sculpting, Nina also hand makes custom urns for families and their pets. This allows us a way to show personalization through creation.
After working for many years at funeral homes, Nina saw a dire need for change and so branched off to spearhead the funeral planning process. We should be prepared for death; we should be able to craft memorials that speak to our individualized tastes and personalities. And that is exactly what Know Before You Go facilitates. Let Nina and her team be your guide.
We are not a funeral home, we do not replace a funeral home. We are simply your guide on your journey to plan and prepare for the inevitable. We do it all. We provide estimates as well as book and secure your choice of funeral home. We offer local seminars for those who want greater meaning and clarity in the funeral process. And we also offer various concepts such as eco-friendly or green dispositions, including water burials and cremation containers that become memorial gardens.
